DAN'S MOM...GRACE
Grace Saldaña Nase January 20, 1919 - July 30, 2005 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you. DEUTERONOMY 5: 16 It has been said that the most important engraving on a tombstone is "the hyphen between the birth date and the date of ones passing". I want to tell you about the "hyphen" between the above dates of my Mom, Altagracia...her given name which means "highest grace." Mom was born in Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic under the brutal dictatorship of the namesake of the Capital; later the name was changed back to Santo Domingo. Her driving desire in her youth and as a young adult was to meet a man from the United States, marry him and get out of the Dominican Republic. Her years there where spent getting an education and dodging the sons and associates the dictator Trujillo...because as you can see, she was a beautiful young woman.
Her wishes and desires were realized when she met my Dad on a blind date in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. My dad was actually raised in Ponce on the southern part of the island. However, he was born in Petersburg, Virginia and was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. She confessed to me a couple of years ago that her only two requirements for a man was that he be tall and American.
Daniel R. Nase, Jr. married my Mom and immediately started their family. Daniel (Danny) Robertson Nase III, that's me folks, was born April 22, 1944 in Ciudad Trujillo on the kitchen table. Many were said to remark, "what beautiful and handsome baby"! Her second son Philip (Phil) Roy Nase was born in New York City. I also might add that he was quite good-looking because his resemblance to me. Evelyn Rose Markham came along later and she turned out to be the best looking and kindness of us all. She was born in Kyoto, Japan, January 19, 1951. Phil and his wife, Judi, now reside in Fort Mill, South Carolina and Evelyn lives with her husband Larry in New Port Richey, Florida.
Mom has six grand-children, Jason & Kirstin (Phil's); Cassandra (Evelyn's); Stephanie, Tiffany & Melanie (Dan's). She also has six great grand-children, Miranda, Christian, Madison, Nathan, Marissa, and Jacob.
As you can read, Mom lived varied life, both culturally and geographically. Being that Dad was in the military, she set up a home for us in 7 states, two countries (Japan & Honduras) and one territory (Guam). She is to be honored for her dedication to her family and the valor to venture into the "unknown". She was committed to doing her part in raising three, sometimes ungrateful children. Her life as a wife, mother and grandmother is to be celebrated, because we, her offspring, are blessed by her virtue and character. She walked in the "light" that she had and made things and people around her better for having known her. Mom became a Christian while visiting us in Mexico City in 1986, when at a Bible Study in our home, a itinerant preacher name Arturo Gonzales Ayala led her to the Lord. I know that these past four years here in our home solidified her faith in Jesus. She was able to cast off the old superstitions and religious traditions that plagued her most of her life and bask in the love and grace of the Father. Her favorite times where when we went to Wednesday night dinner and church service at Immanuel Baptist Church. And also when she accompanied us every Sunday night to the Spanish Mission Church we planted in Quincy Florida. She was known to say that the preacher was her favorite and added...good looking too! Two of her sisters married Mexicans and set up there homes around Mexico City. She is survived by one her three siblings...Francia Hernandez who lives in Cuernavaca Mexico She has many nieces and nephews, but two have been especially close to her...Lourdes and Rafael. We are eternally grateful for our neighbors, Ree, Arryal, Ginny, Mary, Jerry and Berinice, for being there for us and Mom. We thank God for our Pastor, Dr. Rich Kincl and his wife, Kay, for their love for Mom. And a special thanks to Rev. Rick Stewart for his wisdom and common sense.
We
love you Mom! "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints" PSALM 116: 15
