FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS 2007 OVERVIEW

  • The Florida Department of Corrections is the third largest state prison system, after California and Texas .  The department’s annual budget is over 2 Billion dollars ($2,064,537,661.00).   The prison system is divided into 4 regions and is staffed by 26,083 employees, 76.1% of whom are correctional officers.

  • ----------

  • 90, 423 offenders are kept in 135 state facilities.  In addition, another 151,096 offenders are under community supervision.

  • 59 major institutions

  • 76 work camps and community-based facilities  

  • 171 probation offices

  • Custody levels include:  Community Custody, Minimum Custody, Medium Custody, Close Custody, Close Management, Protective Management, Death Row

  • 33,348 inmates were released last year after completing 85.5% of their sentence

  • 32% will be back in prison with a new offense within 24 months

  • 35,098 new inmates were admitted into the system last year

  •  -----------

  • 44% of all inmates admitted had a prior Florida commitment

  • 11.5% of new inmates were female; 46.7% were black, 50.1% were white; 3.1% other, but mainly Hispanic

  • Cost per inmate per day at a major facility was $52.06

  • Cost per inmate per year was $19,002.00 (the national average is around $23,000.00/yr)

  • 376 inmates on Death Row; 62.1% are white, 1 female

  • 44,718 random drug tests were administered resulting in 883 positive tests.

     EDUCATION:

  • 66% of all inmates have less than a 9th grade education

  • 6,375 enrolled in school, 1,461 received their GED

  • 1,567 vocational certificates were awarded

      SUBSTANCE ABUSE:

  • 60% of all inmates have a substance abuse problem

  • 8,032 inmates were enrolled in substance abuse programs last year

    VOLUNTEERS:

  • Chaplaincy Services recruits, trains, schedules and supervises volunteers from many religious traditions to meet a wide variety of inmate religious needs.

  • Over 25,000 volunteers are currently listed in the state’s database.

  • An average of 5,357 volunteers visit Florida D.O.C. facilities and donate approximately 18,000 hours monthly

    CHAPLAINCY:

  • The mission of the Chaplaincy Services Administration of the Florida D.O.C. is to assist in maintaining public safety by providing pastoral care of inmates, staff and their families; assisting offenders in their response to the realities of their actions prior to, during and after incarceration; assisting offenders in discovering or developing their personal faith, and by working in partnership with the community to accomplish mutually beneficial results.
